The Makers Lab
The Makers Lab is an artist-engagement program created by IMAC in 2017. The Makers Lab serves as an incubator of ideas where emerging and/or seasoned local performing artists and organizations are provided with space (at an affordable rate) and the time needed to learn, grow, get inspired, experiment, and create new work.

The IMAC Makers Lab program is designed to assist emerging and/or established individual artists or a team of artists working in a form of movement-based performance. Movement-based performance refers to anything that involves a focus on movement as art, which can be dance, physical theater, dance theater or any hybrid/interdisciplinary form of movement performance and another art form, such as music, puppetry, or visual art.

NoExit Performance
We welcomed NoExit Performance to The Makers Lab for the first time in the Fall of 2019. They used their time in the lab to devise material for The Birds: Inspired by the Hitchcock Classic – a site-responsive performance presented at the Power House on the grounds of Central State Mansion.

Crossroads Dance Indy
Crossroads Indy has used the Makers Lab to create new works for the IndyFringe Festival and other performance opportunities. Crossroads Dance Indy was founded in May 2015 when a group of Indianapolis-based dance artists came together to create artistic opportunities and outlets for inspired creativity. The mission of Crossroads Dance Indy is to establish community connections and impact local society through evolving artistic collaborations and works. We are always delighted elated to have Crossroads’ creative energy in our space.
Elisha Movement Christian Dance Co.
The Makers Lab supported Elisha Movement Christian Dance Company’s during the creation of its first evening length work Lilly of the Valley, performed at IndyFringe in 2017.

The Makers Lab supported Bethany Wells Bak during her creative process for a new dance work Untitled (for the Roses) that was presented at RESPONSE in Memphis, TN and Flourish: A Modern Dance Showcase in Indianapolis in 2017.

Bak returned to The Makers Lab in the spring of 2019 to create a new piece for the 6th installment of Flourish – A Modern Dance Showcase at The White Rabbit Cabaret. The resulting work was selected to be performed in the Regional Alternative Dance Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan in March of 2020.

Lauren Gendron
The Makers Lab supported Lauren in her exploration of the connection between artists of differing mediums. This project manifested as a series of videos featuring public art work in Indianapolis and dancers from South-Central Indiana. This project’s aim was to challenge ourselves as dancers and choreographers to produce and perform, to collaborate with digital artists and traditional artists, and to bring further awareness to the tangible aspects of the vibrant art scene in Indianapolis and surrounding areas.
