July 10th – July 31st
Wednesdays • 7:30 – 8:30pm
Explore connection and communication with your partner as we lay the basic foundational steps of this improvisational partner dance. Drop-ins are welcome, and no partner is necessary; we encourage rotating partners in class. We must have at least 4 pre-registrations for the full 4-week session in order for the June session of Argentine Tango to meet.
Argentine tango is a graceful improvised social (partner) dance. Different from Latin and ballroom dances, there are no set choreographed steps, but rather a focus on connection and communication between partners to create ease and elegance as each step is led. Focusing on these things, this class will give you the ability to navigate the floor with confidence, and the foundation to build more complex and elaborate footwork.
Taught by Alexis Weinkauf and Sherman “Sly” Salangad
Alexis Weinkauf has a background in theater and movement arts, holding a BA from Indiana University. She started her tango career eleven years ago with TangoMontana, and quickly began travelling the country for workshops and festivals and studying with teachers from all corners of the globe, including Buenos Aires.
Six year ago, she found joy in teaching, as well as dj-ing and organizing tango events, while continuing to devote energy to all of these. Her motto is “If you can walk, you can tango.” She loves the dance for its accessibility to all, from the athletic to the elderly, and that there is always something more to learn within it!
Sherman “Sly” Salangad has been dancing for 14 years, mostly in San Francisco, and is proficient in dancing and instructing, both the lead and follower role. He has visited Buenos Aries twice and studied with many premiere teachers of the dance.
