Butoh workshop – Body/World w/Lani Weissbach

September 21st

Saturday • 2:00 -4:00pm

Butoh is a hybrid form of dance theater that came out of Post WWII Japan and is now practiced worldwide. As a continuously evolving artistic movement, butoh is an eclectic blend of Zen, shamanism, Theater of the Absurd, traditional Japanese arts, Western dance forms, and a variety of other practices from around the globe. Butoh aims to penetrate deeply into the subconscious to excavate hidden layers of our existence. Since its inception, Butoh has been a source of creative inspiration and healing for people of all walks of life. Come discover your own idiosyncratic human nature in community with others through a practice that blends play, ritual, imagination and props.  All levels are welcome and no experience is necessary.  Come with a curious, open mind and ready to be moved!

Lani Weissbach is a performer, teacher and choreographer of contemporary dance and somatic movement, and her ongoing investigation of Butoh has deeply informed her work for over 25 years.  As founder and director of Shen & Bones Performance Group, Lani created and performed for 17 years in numerous works of “quiet introspection, raw power, evocative imagery and dark themes” (Steve Sucato, national dance writer/critic).   In addition to frequent engagements throughout Northwestern PA, her work has been presented by the The District Theatre in Indianapolis, IN, The Cleveland Public Theatre, The Vangeline Theater in NYC, The D.C. Arts Center in Washington, D.C., the BeBe Theater in Asheville, N.C. and Links Hall in Chicago.  As a devoted movement educator, Lani has worked in a variety of settings and with a wide range of students, from professional dancers to the elderly and has served on the faculties of numerous colleges and universities throughout Northwest Pennsylvania and the surrounding region from 1998-2016.   Lani is an associate artist with Pounds Per Square Inch (lbs/sq”) under the direction of Gerry Trentham and is featured in Sondra Fraleigh’s Butoh: Metamorphic Dance and Global Alchemy (University of Pittsburgh Press 2010).  She currently serves as the Director of Embodied Learning for the Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective (IMAC) in Indianapolis and guest teaches for numerous universities and organizations in the area.   Lani holds an MFA in dance from Arizona State University, is a Registered Somatic Movement Educator (RSME) with the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA) and is a Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 500) with Yoga Alliance.   For more information, please visit:  http://www.laniweissbach.com.
